This Stack-On fire resistant 22 long gun safe is part of a very popular line of security safes under the Total Defense brand. It will hold up to 22 long guns but can also be converted to store only 11 guns but with more storage space, which is a nice option.
The safe has a lot of very useful features and best of all the price is very low considering what you get as a fire and water safe.
Features and Design
Firstly, all Total Defense Stack-On safes are approved by the CA Department of Justice as meeting their standards for firearm safety. So all aspects of gun storage safety have been vigorously tested to follow regulations by putting safety first.
When looking at all the features that come as standard with this particular fire-safe model you really can’t beat the price for a safe this size with a decent fire rating and water proofing.
This safe is fully carpeted with a convertible interior, meaning you can install or remove the shelves and the Velcro pockets on the inside of the door to create a custom set up. This fire resistant gun safe features a factory installed door storage panel that will allow you to store more gear in less space. There are holsters and selected zippered bags attached to the inside of the door.
They are removable and repositionable giving you greater flexibility to maximize your storage needs. The interior is spacious enough to fit a number of good sized ammo cans if need be and the Velcro handgun holders, bags, and elastic magazine holders are all included with the safe when purchased.
The safe comes with special Stack-On patented long gun barrel rests that do not compress or deteriorate over time. There are also patented standoffs perfect for easy storage and protection of your scoped rifles. These provide one position of storage rather than taking up two or three times the amount of space in a safe. As an added bonus a factory Installed electrical socket for charging or powering electronic devices is standard with this safe. As well as being fire resistant, (see below), this 22 long gun safe offers fantastic water protection.
Floods are the most common and costly natural disasters in the United States. To help combat this problem this safe provides waterproofing protection via a waterproof seal which will protect the contents of your safe from water damage.
A synthetic rubber gasket and other special seals around the safe body will keep water out and the contents dry. ETL has tested and verified that this Total Defense safe will remain waterproof in up to 2 feet of standing water for up to 72 hours.
Security
This safe has a tough locking mechanism to increase security. There are extra-large 1.5 inch tapered live action locking bolts located on the opening side of the door and at the top and bottom of the door. This alone will prevent anyone trying to break in through the front of the safe via the door. 3 stationary bolts are also included on the hinge side of the door. These locking bolts provide up to 10 locking points and secure the door on all four edges for greater security.
There is a large five spoke handle in the center of the door that rotates to extend and retract the live action bolts. Very easy to use especially helpful if you need to get into this gun safe quickly. Total Defense safes are available with three number combination dial locks or electronic locks. This particular safe has an electronic lock system. The electronic lock is easy to program with your own code and there is a backup key provided in case you forget the code.
All the circuitry involving data storage and pin reset are internal preventing access from anyone unaware of your pin…such as a burglar. Batteries are accessible from the front of the safe which assures that you will never be locked out of your safe due to dead battery. A low battery warning light will flash on the electronic keypad to let you know that the batteries will need changing soon.
The doors are reinforced with steel and occupy flame retardant material that will create a protective fire wall within the safe. The door stripping around the edges of the door frame will expand to provide a seal to keep the contents secure in the event of a fire.
The safe has been tested and verified by ETL an independent testing lab to be fire resistant for 1 hour in up to 1400 degrees.
Generally, there will not be any moisture issues if you keep any ammo in the safe however I do recommend you purchase a good gun dehumidifier to put inside.
Things to consider
The total defense family of safes range in size from a fully convertible safe that holds 22 guns to 54 guns. They come in either black with a silver grey door or a grey pebbled finish. This particular gun safe is a fantastic deal considering the features attached to the model. Stack-On did well to add make this a quality safe, making it a great entry level Total Defense safe that will not cost you an arm and a leg.
Considering all the features it has there are no major negatives to mention except for some cosmetic things such as the carpet not being of quality make. Seriously though, a carpet is not going to stop a thief from breaking in is it! There is plenty of storage space including the inside of the door which has its own storage system. This includes removable, zippered bags that let you pack and store your gear in less time as well as a large document pocket and removable holsters for pistol storage.
The electronic lock includes a drill resistant, hardened steel plate behind the lock for greater security. A backup key is included. Batteries are accessible from the front of the safe and are easy to replace.
Holds 22 long guns with space for ammo and has 6 Adjustable shelves. It has a good warranty and will even cover loss of contents due to theft, fire or flood…but make sure you read the fine print. I cannot see many faults with this fire-safe…it is a really good deal!
