Stack-On E-48-MB-E-S Elite 48-Gun Security Safe with Electronic Lock
This Stack-On Elite series safe is very similar to their Total Defense series but focuses more on higher security rather than tougher fire protection. This 48 gun safe has a number of well-designed features that will boost security. It has an improved bolting system although fire protection is basic.
It has organized areas for long guns, ammo and accessories with plenty of space for handguns and other small items on the inside of the door. A real tough safe designed to last.
Features and Design
As with all Stack-On Elite safes this 48 gun electronic lock security safe has been approved by the CA Department of Justice as meeting their standards for firearm safety as per Penal Code Section 12088.
As large safes go the Elite series are really well organized when it comes to the interior design. The exterior measures at 43″W X 26″D X 59″H and the interior is 40.59″W X 19.84″D X 56.69″H at 26.42 (45662 Cubic Inches). Very spacious even for someone with a full long gun collection.
Bear in mind that this is also a very heavy fire resistant safe and weighs around 680 lbs. It would be advisable to get some help on the day of delivery because it will need more than one person to move this thing around even with a dolly.
The Elite series of safes range from a basic 16 gun safe to fully convertible safes that hold anywhere from 24 to 66 guns. This can hold 48 rifles or shotguns or 32 firearms and storage or 16 firearms and storage. You can even take out all shelving to provide all kinds of storage.
The Stack-On E-48-MB-E-S safe comes as standard with a fully fitted carpet and 8 adjustable shelves. All the shelves are removable. As with many of the Stack-On large gun safe ranges attached to the inside of the door is a factory installed door storage panel. This is so handy to have and very useful for storing all manner of smaller items including handguns, ammo, accessories and even other items such as cash and keys.
There are Velcro pockets and selected zippered bags that can be pulled off and stuck on again with ease. There are different sizes of Velcro pockets to suit your needs as well as a number of special handgun holsters, perfect for hanging pistols.
For better organization you also have the option to use the special Stack-On patented long gun barrel rests that do not compress or deteriorate over time. There are also patented standoffs perfect for easy storage and protection of your scoped rifles. These provide one position of storage rather than taking up two or three times the amount of space in a safe.
Unlike the Total Defense series this fireproof safe does not have waterproofing protection. That is a little strange considering all the other features available but I think the Elite series focus a little more on high security and burglar proofing.
Security
As I mentioned above the Stack-On Elite series have invested a little more to get these safes up to high security standards. The locking mechanism is a solid design with 7 extra-large 1.5 inch live action bolts located on the opening side of the door and at the top and bottom of the door. 3 stationary steel dead bolts are also included on the hinge side of the door.
These locking bolts provide up to 10 locking points and secure the door on all four edges for greater security. There is a large five spoke handle in the center of the door that rotates to extend and retract the live action bolts.
This fire resistant safe has drill resistant locks due to the hardened steel plate behind for greater security. The electronic locking system can be easily programmed with your own code and it comes with a backup key just in case the battery dies or you forget your password.
The average battery life is around 100 hours and are accessible from the front of the safe via the keypad. A low battery warning light will flash on the electronic keypad to let you know that the batteries will need changing soon. Plus there is a time out period after 3 incorrect passcode attempts.
The door is reinforced with steel and filled with a flame retardant material that will create a protective fire wall within the safe. The door stripping around the edges of the door frame will expand to provide a seal to keep the contents secure in the event of a fire.
The safe has been tested and verified by ETL an independent testing lab to be fire resistant for 30 minutes in up to 1400 degrees. That is 30 minutes less than you would get from a Total Defense series safe however the security features on this particular safe are more advanced.
Things to consider
The Stack-On E-48-MB-E-S electronic 48-Gun Security Safe is a good sized addition to the high security Elite series. It is big, spacious and very heavy with all the features you would expect from a Stack-On gun safe. The Elite series, when compared to the Total Defense series, is more focused on high security and being burglar proof by adding more locking bolts. Due to this decision it has sacrificed an option of any kind of waterproofing. Also, it is fire resistant for up to 30 minutes rather than a full hour.
It is no doubt a quality safe for its competitive pricing and a perfect safe for those with lots of guns and other items to store. If you are more concerned with high security rather than getting top fire and waterproofing then this Elite series safe is for you. If you want a mixture of the two and maybe a more increased fire resistance then you may want to consider a Total Defense safe.
