Where it all began
The Sentry Group had their humble beginnings in 1930. During this time it existed with the partnership between John Brush Sr. and Willard Punnett, his brother-in-law. They decided to put up a small shop that would work into the manufacturing of safes.
Little did they know that this small shop would become one of the pioneering companies that delve into the manufacturing of steel safes.
Early successes of the company can be attributed to their sales to Vassar College where their products where used in the dormitories and sales to Eastmen Kodak.
John Brush Sr. and Willard Punnett officially started producing safes in 1932 and just a little over a decade after, the company will have been the sole proprietorship of John Brush.
As he wanted to eventually pass over the company to his sons, he decided to buy out his sister and brother-in-laws share in the company. It then became known as Brush & Co. It was only in 1987 that the company changed its name to what it is known today, Sentry Group.
Though considered as one of the pioneers in safe manufacturing, the Sentry Group prides itself in making extraordinary improvements to their products throughout the years.
Breaking new grounds in safe manufacturing
During the company’s early stages, it was known to be among the few who were able to successfully manufacture steel safes. Even with this prestige, the company didn’t stop from thinking of more ways to improve their products and to provide better safes for their customers.
The Sentry Group is the first company to have produced a fire-resistant safe in 1955 that were of UL standards. It had passed Underwriters Laboratories tests and was able to successfully release safes that would protect its contents from fire.
This was definitely a breakthrough in the industry. Before safes were merely used as a form of security, now it had a bigger and more important purpose of protecting customer’s valuables from fire.
Over the next years they have surpassed standards of fire resistance and have also improved their locking technology.
If this isn’t enough, they still lead the way to a new way of using safes. It was the first company to produce a fire-resistant digital safe that you can access from a USB to a computer. This is another breakthrough that would change the way safes were being perceived and used.
