The SentrySafe X055 is one of the smaller ranges of home safes and is popular with people looking to store small items with a more basic security. It is the smallest of this X series of SentrySafe models with a capacity of 0.5 cubic feet. Out of the three versions this particular model is probably the easiest to conceal.

The features are pretty much the same as the X125 and the X105 with only a maybe a few minor differences one of which being the actual difference in sizes, weight and capacity.

It is well constructed and does have some nice little features that work together to make a nice all round safe for a very affordable price.

Visually, this model does resemble the SentrySafe X105 and has similar features. However, the X105 was designed with more length in order to accommodate laptops. The X055 has a squarer dimension suited for securing a variety of different shaped items. Its exterior measurements are 8.7 x 13.8 x 10.6 inches and its interior measures 8.5 x 13.6 x 8.7 inches making it not too small and not too big.

It can hold documents but if are storing legal sized paper and want to make sure it can lie flat, you might want the slightly bigger models either X105 or X125.

Many would say it is just the right size for bolting it down in a closet somewhere out of sight. I would strongly recommend that you take advantage of the option to mount the unit. Doing this will add greater security to the safe as a whole.

The types of items you would expect to save in this home safe would be things like jewelry, family keepsakes, documents and small electronic items. Particulars that are used on a regular basis, such as car keys, cell phones, iPods, MP3 players and things of that nature would also be suited to the SentrySafe X055.

X055 Safety Mechanisms

Setting up this small safe is a very simple process. It has an electronic lock that you can program between 2 to 8 digits for the code. Just install four AA batteries and follow the easy instructions in the manual to set up the combination code. There are three visible LED lights that will guide you through this process.

On the door there are two live-locking bolts or deadlocks that secure it closed and unlike other safes, you don’t need to use a key in addition to the combination lock when you open the safe. All you do is punch in the code and away you go.

If the keypad batteries die or if you forget the combination, you can still open the safe using the two override keys that are included. This is a nice little touch but just make sure that you put the keys in a good hiding place. Putting them both in different rooms would be ideal. Never store your keys in the safe itself.

For added strength there is a hardened steel lock plate that will protect the safe from any kind of tampering and to resist drilling. The hinges are also concealed for extra security against prying.

Included with the X055 is a soft carpeted base to protect your delicate valuables from scratches. Tough on the outside and soft on the inside.

Now, this is a fairly lightweight safe at 19.4 pounds and a determined thief could quite easily walk off with it. To counter this I would advise you to find an appropriate place to hide it and then bolt it either to the floor, wall or both.

Operating The Electronic Lock

First thing you need to do is add batteries to this X055 safe. Always use the alkaline variety and never use rechargeable batteries.

To install the batteries just remove the cover which is located between the knob and the keypad. Use the provided override key to unlock the door. Open, and you will find on the inside back of the door is a small battery cover. Remove this and add the batteries.

When you first receive the safe it will have its default code number. For optimum security it is advisable to re-program a code that you personally select. To do this:

1. Remove the battery cover inside the door and press the little button within its compartment.  You will notice a yellow light turn on meaning it is ready to receive your new code.
2. Pick a code, you have a choice from 2 to 8 digits, and then enter it on the pad followed by the “Hash” key. At this point the light will turn off indicating that the new code has been accepted.
3. If there is a fail somewhere then the yellow light will begin to flash and beep. All you have to do is start the process again.
